Key points

  • Pay must be equal to or higher than comparable Japanese workers. Japanese labor rules on hours, safety, leave, and insurance apply.
  • Do not rely only on a job ad. Check base pay, overtime, allowances, deductions, dormitory, meals, travel costs, and estimated take-home pay in the written conditions.
  • Do not agree to contracts demanding a security deposit or an unreasonably high penalty for leaving a job.
  • Keep control of your passport and residence card rather than leaving them with an employer or broker.
  • If actual conditions differ, wages are unpaid, or there is violence or intimidation, contact a Labor Standards Inspection Office, FRESC, or Immigration consultation service.
