What is Specified Skilled Worker? SSW (i) and (ii)

Specified Skilled Worker is a residence status for foreign nationals with skills needed in designated labor-shortage fields in Japan.

SSW (i) generally requires both a field skills test and a Japanese-language test.

The usual route from passing tests to a contract, residence application, entry, and starting work.

The accepting organization must implement a support plan so SSW (i) workers can work and live stably.

Key checks for equal pay, written conditions, and avoiding improper deposits or penalties.

SSW is not permanently tied to one company, but job changes and renewals require conditions and procedures.

SSW (ii) is available in 11 fields and confirms proficient skills plus relevant work or supervisory experience.

Satisfactory completion of Technical Intern Training (ii) does not automatically exempt every test.
